When to Consider Rewiring
While there’s no strict guidance on when to rewire your home, there are several signs that may warrant a rewiring project. At Harkins and Vickers, we recommend a preliminary Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) to help you make that decision (more can be found about our EICR service here)
During an EICR, our NICEIC-certified electrician will compile a list of potential dangers and/or recommendations to your electrical systems within the property and if they believe your building will benefit from a rewiring project, they will advise you to do so.
If you are unsure if you need electrical rewiring, there are multiple signs that your home may need a rewire, such as:
- Flickering lights.
- Burning smell (please turn off your electrics if this is present and contact an electrician)
- Discolouration on sockets or switches, such as burn marks
- If you have purchased an older property, it is likely it will have an electrical rewire
- Sparks and electric shocks (please refrain from investigating by yourself and contact an electrician)
- Buzzing and crackling. (If you hear any suspicious noises from your sockets, contact an electrician).
- Any cables that are sheathed in any material that isn’t PVC – such as lead, fabric or black rubber.
- Lack of earthing (green and yellow cabling) present at light switches, sockers or light fittings.
- Signs of overheating on cables, accessories or the consumer unit (also known as a fuse board).
If there are multiple of these issues, your home will likely need rewiring to be a safe property to live or work in.
How Much Does a Rewire Cost?
Every one of our rewiring jobs comes with a free evaluation, so you can expect a transparent price when you rewire with Harkins and Vickers.
Our rewiring cost encompasses stripping out old wires, installing a new metal fuse board with full RCD and SPD protection, and accommodating additional sockets, switches, and lighting positions. Tailoring our services to your needs, we can even hardwire CAT6 (internet) or coax (Television) cables.
A rough guideline for a 3-bedroom home in Glasgow, rewiring costs typically range between £3000-5000, while a 1 or 2-bedroom home averages £2000-£4000.
We understand that this can seem like a costly sum, so we also offer financing options through a trusted partner, which can be discussed before the electrical rewire.
How Long Does a Rewire Take?
While most rewiring can be completed within 4 days for standard properties, more complex rewires may extend to 8 working days, but our goal is always to minimize disruption to your life.
Understanding the urgency often associated with rewiring needs, we prioritize swift response times. Our standard lead time for a full rewire, from free evaluation to the rewiring itself, can be completed within 1–2 weeks, but we can expedite the process for urgent cases, ensuring your safety and peace of mind.
Are you accredited electricians?
Yes, we are indeed. We are proudly accredited as a NICEIC Approved Contractor and are accredited with ISO 14001 & 19001. You view our whole list of accreditations here.
Will you install items that I supply?
Yes, if you wish to supply your own materials then we will be happy to fit them, however, please note that we do not issue any guarantees or warranties on client supplied items.
We would always recommend purchasing your electrical items through us which will allow you to receive our 2-year warranty as standard. We can even offer extended warranties on some of our items, get in touch here to find out more.
Which payment methods do you accept?

- Our preferred payment method is direct bank transfer, our banking details are clearly displayed at the foot of our invoices.
- You may call our office and we can take credit or debit card payments over the phone.
- Unfortunately, we don’t accept cash or cheques.
Do you offer free electrical advice?
Yes, we do offer free advice, most of our office staff are experienced electricians and will be able to advise you on the best solution to your electrical issue, however, we never advise carrying out electrical work yourself so in that instance we would not be able to help.
Do you offer free quotes?
Yes, we offer free quotes and surveys for all electrical installation work.
The only work that we don’t offer free surveys and quotes for are electrical repairs. Typically, we would advise you that an electrician would need to attend to investigate the issue and provide a solution to your issue.
Although, sometimes we may ask you to send us photos over email to save you the cost of the electrician’s attendance if we are able to do so.
